Upholstery care

Care and Maintenance guide for Soft Furnishings

  • Modern sofas are designed to be sat on in comfort but this can only be achieved if they are used correctly.  Sitting on the edges of cushions or on the arms may well cause premature wear and distortion of the fabrics or underlying upholstery layers and  for that reason these practices should be avoided.

  • Never allow sharp edged toys, shoe buckles, jewellery or household pets to snag the fabric.  If snags do unfortunately occur however, very carefully cut the snag off using a sharp pair of scissors.  Under no circumstances pull the snag as this can cause irreparable damage to the fabric.

  • If your furniture is in constant everyday use it is recommended that all reversible cushions should be turned and switched positions on a daily basis to even out wear on both fabric and underlying upholstery materials. If your cushions are not reversible or you should find some seams twisting, they can be reset by firmly stroking the cover back into position starting at the seam and stroking in the opposite direction of the twist.

  • Vacuum clean your upholstery regulary using the suction nozel attachment, dust removal may be improved by first brushing the fabric with a soft brush.  Accumulations of dust particles within the fabric will accelerate wear and dull the colours prematurely.

  • Avoid subjecting your upholstered furniture to long periods of direct sunshine as this may result in the fabric fading or in extreme circumstances rotting. Always protect your furniture by drawing the blinds or curtains or covering it with a throw.

  • These precautions will help prevent excessive soiling and wear to the fabric and will help you to keep your furniture looking better for longer.

  • Where zips are fitted this is very often to assist the manufacturing process and does not imply that the cushion covers are suitable for removal for cleaning.

  • All pile fabrics, like chenille, are susceptible to shading and pressure marking giving the appearance of patches of varying degrees of colour.  This change in appearance is characteristic of all types of pile fabric and as such should not be seen as fault as this in no way affects their wearability.

  • Please don’t allow your children to demonstrate their gymnastic abilities on your new sofa or chair as both furniture and child could suffer damage.

  • Nothing lasts forever so even your new furniture will eventually wear out in time but, with a degree of care and consideration for its intended function, your upholstery should remain a continued source of pride and satisfaction for many years to come.
